Cheers to Drinking, Irish Style
When we drink, we get drunk. – When we get drunk, we fall asleep. – When we fall asleep, we commit no sin. – When we commit no sin, we go to heaven. – So, let’s all get drunk, and go to heaven!
This old Irish toast is one of the many glimpses of how the Irish enjoy their alcohol — boisterous, festive, and plenty. Movies such as The Boxer, Intermission, The Departed, and Gangs of New York, having shown the toughness and resilience of an Irish, also reveal more of their roots.
If you have heard of the term “drinking Irish,” then you would know how they take their beers (and often times Guinness) seriously. But how accurate is the association of the culture with the excessive drinking?
In an article from Alcohol Action Ireland, the Irish drink approximately 20 percent more than other Europeans. This ranks the country with the highest number of alcohol consumption in the European Union.
Moreover, the World Health Organization reported in 2014 that 39 percent of Irish people aged 15 years old and above engage to heavy or binge drinking in a month. Healhy Ireland Survey, on the other hand, stated in 2015 that 76 percent of the Irish drink alcohol, with 53 percent of them doing it weekly.
“Drinking to excess on a regular basis is commonplace throughout the population,” Healhy Ireland Survey added. “Four out of ten drinkers in Ireland drink to harmful levels on a monthly basis, with over a fifth doing so on a weekly basis.”
